Overview

Working professionals relocating to new a area experience social discomfort and don’t have the time to establish a new social circle. These users want a way they can connect with new community and the people around them

Event Ease is a platform that lets users connect with other users. As-well as letting users quickly browse, book, and share upcoming events.

Research

To thoroughly investigate the topic, I used two research methods: surveys and interviews. Starting with a survey to identify general problems people face after moving, which gave a basic understanding of the challenges. Then, I conducted in-depth interviews with five individuals who had relocated in the past year to gather more detailed and valuable information.

Research Goals

  • I need to understand what makes living in a new area hard

  • I need to understand who is experiencing problems when moving to a new area.

  • I need to understand why people move

  • I need to understand how far people are moving

  • I need to understand how many people were involved in the move

  • I need to understand if people are familiar with the area they moved to.

Findings

  • Participants encountered difficulty acquainting themselves with the new surroundings primarily due to their busy schedules.

  • Meeting new people emerged as a prominent challenge among participants. This is significant as it contributes to their feelings of loneliness.

  • The demographic of movers is trending towards adults aged 18-35, these movers are most commonly moving because of education, work opportunities, and lifestyle changes.

Understanding the User:

From my research I was able to identify what my ideal user would look like. Creating a persona was a crucial point in this project. Identifying who this design was for provided clarity for moving forward.

Establishing Order

Using site mapping I was able to identify what features my MVP would need. I used my sitemap to create a user flow to identify how I would want my user to navigate my design and how they might get confused. From here I was able to construct a task flow to visualize the task I want my users to accomplish.

Design

Using competitive analysis I was able to identify features that would provide value to Event Ease. Rapid sketching allowed me to experiment and test those features to quickly and with little effort.

Wire Frame

Lo-fidelity wire framing was a useful tool for me, it helped me test how users may navigate my site as well as visualise how my site might look.

Being able to test my product at this stage proved very useful because I was able to identify problems in a low consequence way. I was also able to establish components at this stage which saved me a lot of time.

Product Testing

Creating the high fidelity prototype brought users closer to the real product. Prototyping my design meant I was able to test my product. Using my task flows from earlier I did just that. I wanted to test my users ability to filter the feed and bookmark and share an event. The metrics used to test the validity of my product was the user perception of speed and familiarity. I asked user to score the designs overall speed and familiarity out of 10.

User Scores:

  • Speed: 8.3/10

  • Familiarity: 9.2/10

Issues

The issues identified by users were:

  • Users Identified the scroll behavior on certain pages to be clunky

  • Filter page could be more detailed

With these issues I prioritized adjusting the scroll behavior, I choose this because it directly impacted my task flows. After iterating my scroll behavior I was able to add a few more elements to my filter page to make it more detailed.

Reflection

With my first project under my belt I learned so much about myself as a designer and about the process of design.

  1. I need to practice user research. During this project I took on the role of interviewer. I quickly discovered that I needed more confidence as an interviewer for my users to take me more seriously.

  2. The time it takes for research and testing. I found that I used a lot of time in these processes. I could reduce the time used here by having a more structured plan.
